Meet The Staff at the Salem Sleep Medicine Clinic
Dr. Hyong Shim, MD
I was born in Seoul, Korea. I came to The United States with my family when I was 18. I attended The University of Washington School of Medicine from 1988 through 1992 and I completed my residency at Legacy Portland Internal Medicine program in 1995. Although I enjoyed Internal Medicine, chronic sleep deprivation from night calls gradually affected my life. I was often unmotivated and always tired. When I turned 40 I knew I did not want to continue to practice Internal Medicine in the same way anymore. At first I just wanted to know how to achieve better sleep. However, when I was introduced to Sleep Medicine by Martin C. Johnson II, MD, I realized Sleep Medicine was a vast and exciting field.
It was indeed a new world to me. I decided to study Sleep Medicine intensely and that this would be my new specialty. When the American Board of Sleep Medicine offered its first Board exam in November 2007, I took the test and became a Board certified Sleep Medicine physician. I have been a full time Sleep Specialist since August 2008. I love every minute of practicing Sleep Medicine. When my patients come in feeling fatigued and unrested it is exciting to see how much their sleep improves with proper treatments. My motto is “we will give you your life back”!
I am grateful to be married to a truly wonderful wife and we have two children. In my free time I enjoy singing, occasionally performing solos, and playing table tennis. I gave myself the nickname “the terminator Shim” but no one in my table tennis club seems to be intimidated by my nickname. I find this quite annoying.
Meet The Salem Sleep Medicine Team
Our team is comprised of highly trained and experienced sleep medicine professionals. Our techs are Registered Polysomnographic Technologists that have a combined experience of over 20 years in the field.
Many of our techs are PAP therapy users and have the first hand knowledge needed to help our patients with their treatment. Our office staff ensures that every patient feels welcome and has a positive experience with us.
We will handle all prior authorizations needed for our services and we will let you know what your insurance coverage will be if you are scheduled for a sleep study. Please feel free to call us if there’s anything we can do to make your time with us more comfortable.

Jeremy is a very seasoned RSPGT (Registered Polysomnographic Technologist), LPSGT (Licensed Polysomnographic Technologist) in the state of Oregon, and has worked in the medical field for 17 years, and in sleep medicine for nearly 7 years. He performs and has extensive experience with overnight sleep studies and MSLT (Mean Sleep Latency Test). Jeremy also performs PAP-NAPs for patients who have difficulty tolerating CPAP therapy.
Katie is a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and is also licensed in the State of Oregon (LPSGT) to practice sleep medicine.
