Hyong Shim, MD
Board Certified Sleep Medicine Physician
Dr. Shim was born in Seoul, Korea. He came to the United States with his family when he was 18. He attended the University of Washington School of Medicine from 1988 through 1992 and completed his residency at Legacy Portland Internal Medicine Program in 1995. Although he enjoyed internal medicine, chronic sleep deprivation from being on call gradually affected his life. Dr. Shim was often unmotivated and always tired. When he turned 40, he knew he did not want to continue to practice medicine in the same way. At first, he just wanted to know how to achieve better sleep, but when Dr. Shim was introduced to sleep medicine by Martin C. Johnson II, MD, he realized it was a vast and exciting field.
It was indeed a new world. Dr. Shim decided to study sleep medicine exclusively and make it his new specialty. When the American Board of Sleep Medicine offered its first board exam in November 2007, he took the test and became a board certified sleep medicine physician. Dr. Shim has been a full-time sleep specialist since August 2008. He loves every minute of practicing sleep medicine. When his patients come in feeling fatigued and exhausted, he is excited to see how much their sleep improves with proper treatments.
Dr. Shim is married to his wonderful wife and has two children. In his free time, he enjoys singing, performing solos, and playing table tennis. He gave himself the nickname “The Terminator Shim,” but finds it quite annoying that no one in his table tennis club is intimidated by it.
